Today we will discuss Frankincense essential oil and we will understand about the healing benefits of it.

Frankincense is also known as Olibanum. It is the most common essential oils in aromatherapy. It also provides a lot of healing benefits especially in reducing pain, swelling and inflammation. It has also been known to fight and provide immune boosting properties for people suffering from cancer.

So what is Frankincense essential oil?

The frankincense oil comes under the genus Boswellia and it's resins are known Boswellia carterii, Boswellia frereana or Boswellia serrata. They grow commonly in Somalia and the Middle East. They need very little water and very little soil. They can grow in very remote, dry, and arid places. Through the years, it has gained a lot of importance. Whether be in the Christian religion or Hindu religion or Muslim religion or any other cultures. It has a smell which feels like a combination of lemon, Thyme and Woody smell like that of Sandalwood. It also grows natively in Indian subcontinent. Boswellia serrata has special compounds which proved to be anti-inflammatory and anti-cancerous as well. It also contains terpenes and boswellic acids which help to protect the healthy cells.

Frankincense oil can be used in various methods. The resin of frankincense comes in solid form. It can be burned to produce a very pleasant smell in the spaces. The oil of frankincense can be mixed with Jojoba oil or coconut oil. The mixture can be used in application to the skin as in massage or oil preparations. It can also be mixed with water to burn in ceramic burners. Frankincense has an ability to affect the limbic system of the brain which is responsible for causing emotions and expressions. The ingestion of Frankincense is suggested to be limited and in small quantities only.

Frankincense oil can have a lot of effects on our feelings and emotions. Firstly it helps to reduce our reactions to stress and negative emotions. During stress the heart rate and blood pressure tends to increase a lot. In the presence of frankincense oil, the heart rate starts to decrease and the anxiety that may arise would also reduce. In the long term frankincense helps to reduce the chances of having depression like state. When compared to medications, Frankincense does not have any side effects, adverse reactions and does not bring in drowsiness.

Frankincense helps to boost the immune system and does help to reduce chances of illness. Frankincense can be very well mixed with body butters like Shea butter, Cocoa butter. It can be mixed with oils like coconut oil, almond oil and it can be combined with other essential oils like Jasmine and Lavender.
